China's New Air Defense Zone and New World Power

Over the past week China has been asserting it's power by creating an air defense zone over the East China Sea. This zone is above undisputed islands, so it is causing a lot of tension between China and the United States. Obama is about to take a week long tour around Asia where he can hopefully settle these disputes. The US only wants China to not enforce the zone. I think a key thing to think about is how this could spur future arguments, and how this began. China's economy has had a growth rate over 9% for the past three decades. They are becoming a world power economically, so now they are trying to assert there power in other places. This could mean a new era of world powers...a post american world. This is a major thing for the US to think about since we have been the superpower of the world since world war II. China and the US are hitting heads because they are both trying to spread there power outside of their homeland. The US is trying to widen its influence in Asia and so is China. China believes that the US is trying to do this strictly because we want to try to slow down their fast development. It will be interesting to see in the future if there will be a new balance of power in the world since we can already see signs from China. India is also growing at a very fast rate, but the US is supporting them because of their present democracy and their is a lot of potential for the US their. The growing world powers are China and India, where China is the challenger and India is the Ally.

Switzerland's Vote On Executieve Pay

I really don't agree with this. I feel that this is just going away from laissez faire. CEO's of company's have the most experience and have worked very hard to make their businesses successful. If the CEO is running a successful company, he should be able to decide what he is paid. The government intervention in how a public business pays shareholders is too far, and is moving away from a hands off government. On the other hand though, I do believe that CEO's ,who make and reward themselves high amounts of pay, should in their heart give some to middle class shareholders. There appears to be no appreciation of the fact that there are many middle class investors who invest their savings accumulated over many years of service, and many of them are receiving little or no return when they could be receiving part of the CEO's and other overpaid high office holders. There is no doubt that the compensation system has encouraged CEO's to find ways to increase there bonuses, but I don't think it is the governments duty to change this. The CEO's just need to be a little more giving.

Twitter's IPO

Facebook went public last year and now Twitter is. Facebook's launching of an IPO had a terrible start because of how late Mark Zuckerburg decided to launch it, but hopefully this is not the case for twitter. I think that twitter will be more successful than Facebook was strictly on the fact that I believe its perks and structure is overall better. It is simple and easy to use. It provides easier access for marketing from businesses, and also easy  and quick ways to get news out to the public. Facebook use has died down in the recent years and I think that has some part in its disastrous launch of an IPO. Looking at the price chart for Twitter's stock, it will be interesting to see how it does in the future. Since November 7th it had done fine, but you never know what can happen. These next few weeks will show how much confidence people really have in twitter, and hopefully it is not the same confidence people had with Facebook when it launched.

Bigfoot

The so-called "Legend of Bigfoot" started around 1958. No one really has discovered clear evidence of this strange creature's existence, but people continue to buy in. Why though? Brian Cronk, a professor of psychology at Missouri Western State University stated, "The human brain is always trying to determine why things happen, and when the reason is not clear, we tend to make up some pretty bizarre explanations. Since it is not clear that Bigfoot is real or not, people want to go ahead and believe in it just to make an explanation the blurred sightings. Another reason this phenomenon continues to exist is that it is a huge business hoax, and the people running the show are doing a great job bringing people into the idea. The only way for this to stop is for scientists to prove it doesn't exist, which is kind of an impossible task. And now this past week a accidental shooting occurred in the hunt for this mystery creature. Two men are hunting for Bigfoot, and one man hears a barking noise so he turns around and accidentally shoots his friend. Why would you hunt Bigfoot anyway? In all the Jack Links commercials he is a  big friendly beast, so obviously there is no reason to shoot him. The police didn't believe the guys, and I wouldn't either. The story sounds absurd right from the get go. People need to stop being so gullible.

Spying on Allies

If a country is a US ally they should not be spied on. What the NSA is doing has been going on for a long time and needs to stop. Unjustified surveillance of the world's people is immoral and downright wrong. The statement the US responded with to Merkel's accusation was very childish. Jay Carney, the White House Press Secretary, said,"The United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of Chancellor Merkel." Basically, the NSA was caught red handed and they are trying to not fully admit that they spied on Merkel. This is the same way a child acts when he lies, not fully telling the truth, but bending it. If the US wants to keep its superpower status it needs to be truthful with its allies. Merkel said it perfectly,"We need to have trust in our allies and partners, and this must now be established once again. I repeat that spying among friends is not at all acceptable against anyone, and that goes for every citizen in Germany." Although not as severe, it's the same concept when a friend is caught reading through another friends text messages. The friend loses trust in him and makes sure it doesn't happen again by putting a passcode on his phone. I also believe that Obama needs to take responsibility for this. He can't avoid this because he supposedly didn't know about it. He is the President of The United States. He runs the show and there should be no excuse for not knowing. As we can see in all these situations, the government is corrupt. It does not matter who you elect becuase most likely they will be a liar.

Riots in Moscow

It seems like mostly all the bad things that keep popping up on the news everyday have some relation to ethnicity. I believe these are bogus problems because the simple solution is people just learning to live together. The migrants are the main root of the problem and many Russians are very scared. One woman said,  "They (migrants) are always attacking, stealing from and killing people. They don't even abide by basic rules like stopping at a red light." I think this can be considered an act of terrorism. The migrants are instilling fear into the people of Moscow, and many are scared to even leave there houses because of the fear of being mugged or killed. One resident also said that the migrants do take low paying jobs like construction, which is needed in the the country. Migrant labor has also played a crucial role in Russia's oil fueled economic boom. Both parties are benefiting from each other so in a perfect world there should be no problem. There is a positive and a negative to having these migrant workers in the country. I think the Russian people need to come to peace with the migrants because they have been a huge part of the success of the nation. In the future, we might see Russian government restricting immigration because of the problem. This problem also looks like it relates to the United states problem with immigration. Immigrants are taking the low paying jobs in both countries, and many are also criminals. All in all, there needs to be a resolution so the Russians and migrants come to peace with one another.

3rd Golden Age of Television

Many shows have circulated through the cycle of television in the 21 century. The most popular shows tended to deal with men and were more action packed. These shows also had a good amount of criticism from feminists. The main roles of the popular television shows were men. I think that if a woman as described in the article would have played the main role in some of these shows they would not have been nearly as popular.  People today want to see something they would not see everyday. A businesswoman would not appeal to many viewers. Phillip Maciak says "Imagine if that show had focused on a powerful woman rather than a powerful man, a businessperson rather than a murderer, a potential hero rather than the anti-hero." I think that if this change would have happened these shows would not have made it this far. People just don't want to see everyday things on TV. The show with the powerful woman might seem like it would help the feminist movement, but all in all it would not be a popular show. A perfect example from the article would be the show The Sopranos. Old time Italian gangsters are not ordinary in today's world, but when you throw one on television everyone loves it. Today's society enjoys action and things that are out of the ordinary to their everyday life that they will probably never experience themselves, so the our age of television also needs to revolve around this.
